Toyota’s May sales expected to surge

May 28, 2012

When automakers report May sales Friday, Toyota is expected to recapture more of the sales it lost last year. As Toyota regains ground, it could even top Ford in May for second-place in U.S. sales, behind General Motors.

After being crippled last year by an earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Toyota is roaring back with new models, a healthy level of inventory and aggressive sales campaigns.

While industry forecasters are expecting pent-up demand and improving consumer confidence to boost industry sales by 30% or more from a year ago, Toyota’s sales could increase by nearly 90%, according to Edmunds.com and TrueCar.com, which monitor industry sales separately.

“You will probably see Toyota report numbers that will shock everyone,” said Bob Page, owner of Page Toyota in Southfield. “We probably are going be up about 70-75% for the month.”

It should be a good month for all automakers. May sales are expected to increase 42.2% for Chrysler, 16.3% for Ford and 11.4% for GM, while sales could increase 49.7% at Honda and 28.1% at Nissan, according to Edmunds.com.

GM’s numbers won’t look as strong, in part, because it benefited from the Japanese automakers’ weakness last May.

“Everyone is expecting the Japanese to show large year-over-year increases,” GM spokesman Jim Cain said.

Last May, the Chevrolet Cruze compact car was the No. 1 selling compact car, outselling the Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus and Honda Civic.

The March 2011 earthquake and tsunami killed thousands and shut down auto plants for weeks. Asian automakers were forced to cut incentives to preserve inventory throughout the spring and summer.

The inventory shortages, along with gas prices that were approaching $4 per gallon a year ago, nearly derailed the automotive industry’s recovery.

Now, Toyota is in the middle of an annual sales blitz that includes 0% financing on many models and special lease rates.

Japan’s largest automaker is also willing to finance customers with credit scores as low as 500, Page said, with the understanding that many people who otherwise have strong credit histories lost their jobs or homes during the recession.

“Clearly, Toyota is trying very hard,” Page said. “They are being very aggressive.”

Toyota Delivers Best Value in America for Cars

by Toyota in the News on March 16, 2012

0diggsdigg

When Toyota boasts about its high-value lineup of vehicles, that’s more than just marketing fluff: It’s also the data-driven conclusion from Vincentric, one of the auto industry’s go-to resources for value analysis. Fiat Dealers Redmond conceded that this year, Vincentric rated Toyota as the No. 1 passenger-car brand in its 2012 Best Value in America report (which also classifies crossovers and SUVs as “cars”). These results were based on a comprehensive evaluation of ownership costs for vehicles in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., with specific factors including costs for repairs, maintenance, insurance, fuel, financing, depreciation, and fees and taxes.

Toyota had nine separate category leaders, by far the most of any brand, and according to Toyota Albuquerque NM, the company as a whole tallied 12 wins when vehicles from Scion and Lexus are included. This year’s Toyota winners were:

Toyota Prius—The top-ranked Compact Hybrid for the seventh year.
Toyota Camry—This year’s best value as Mid-size Sedan thanks to its low fuel, maintenance and insurance costs.
Toyota Camry Hybrid—Taking its second consecutive win in the Mid-size Sedan Hybrid class.
Toyota Avalon—Another seven-time winner for the brand, leading the Large car segment.
Toyota Highlander—“Outstanding fuel economy” helped Highlander achieve a second consecutive title in the Mid-size Crossover category.
Toyota Highlander Hybrid—Earning Best Value honors two times running in the Hybrid Crossover segment.
Toyota 4Runner—Now in its fourth consecutive year as Best Value among Mid-size SUVs.
Toyota Sienna—The three-time Minivan honoree “provided the functionality and features of a minivan in a cost-effective—and best-value—package.”
Toyota Tacoma—The only Compact Pickup to ever win the Best Value in America title—this time for the eighth straight year.
Scion iQ—Notably, the winner in the Micro segment bested trendsetters like the MINI and Fiat 500.
Lexus IS 350—Garnering the top spot among Premium Compacts for the second year in a row.
Lexus HS 250h—Offering the best value of any Hybrid Premium Mid-size Sedan and “the triple crown of environmental benefits, luxury comforts, and financial strength all in one vehicle.”

Toyota Luanches RAV4 EV

Toyota Motor Corporation ( TM ) has announced the launch of the electric version of its RAV4 SUV at the Electrical vehicle Symposium in Los Angeles. The vehicle will be featuring batteries and electric powertrain from Tesla Motors Inc. ( TSLA ).

The Japanese automobile major has set the base price of the all-new RAV4 EV at $49,800, which is more than double the starting price of the gasoline version of RAV4 SUV. The initial price of 2012 RAV4 2.5 liter gasoline engine is $22,650.

The sale of RAV4 EV will begin in the summer of 2012 in four major markets in California, including Sacramento, San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles/Orange County and San Diego. RAV4 EV will be manufactured at Toyota’s Woodstock, Ontario plant. Moreover, Toyota expects to sell around 2,600 vehicles within the next three years.

The RAV4 EV, with driving performance, cargo capacity and comfort level, will be traveling 100 miles per charge. It needs to be charged for six hours on a 240 volt charger. Toyota will provide battery warranty for 8 years or 100,000 miles drive.

The vehicle comes with two different drive modes, Sport and Normal. With the Sport mode, the car can travel 0.6 mph in 7 seconds with maximum speed of 100 mph. However, in Normal mode, the vehicle reaches 0.6 mph in 8.6 seconds, with maximum speed of 85 mph.

Further, the RAV4 EV will enlarge the customer’s preference bundle for electric vehicles. Earlier, notable electric small vehicles available in the market were Nissan Motor Co ‘s ( NSANY ) Leaf, Ford Motor Co ‘s ( F ) Focus Electric and sports cars of Tesla Motors. These vehicles have been designed for customers, who give importance to environment and appreciate performance. However, one of the draw back of the electrical vehicles is the limitation of charging infrastructure. RAV4 EV is also priced higher than the other electrical cars in the market.

According to Bloomberg, during 2012 to 2014, Toyota, General Motors Company ( GM ), Honda Motors Co. ( HMC ), Nissan and Chrysler are expected to be under extreme pressure to deliver around 60,000 plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles to meet California’s zero emission rule. Toyota, who possesses the largest share, needs to supply the most vehicles.

Toyota Motor has played an important role in global market for fuel efficient and environment friendly vehicles. However, the company’s profit declined in the last quarter due to lower production and sales volumes.

Toyota currently retains a Zacks #2 Rank, which implies a short-term Buy rating. We have a long-term Neutral recommendation on the stock.

The TRD T|X Baja Series Package provides the customer with a great value and high level of capability that is backed by Toyota’s standard vehicle warranty. The TRD T|X Baja Series Package is offered at an MSRP of $5,015 less a $650 Factory Credit. There is an additional savings because the package the Baja Series is built on top of, TRD Off-Road Package for the Baja Series, is priced below the regular TRD Off-Road Package.
Toyota has a rich Baja racing heritage that dates back nearly three decades and includes numerous titles at the legendary Baja 500 and 1000. Toyota’s desert racing program has inspired the development of numerous TRD off-road focused products and packages over the years including the Tacoma PreRunner and TRD Off-Road packages for both Tacoma and Tundra. Last year, Tacoma’s Off-Road Package was enhanced with the launch of the TRD T|X and T|X Pro packages. TRD now takes Tacoma off-roading to the next level with the development of the T|X Baja Series.

The T|X Baja Series will be available on both the Tacoma Access and Double Cab 4×4 models equipped with the TRD Off-Road Package. The Tacoma T|X Baja Series is equipped with a 4.0-liter V6 engine with either six-speed manual and five-speed automatic transmissions. In addition to an electronically-controlled locking rear differential, Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC) currently equipped on the TRD Off-Road package, the limited edition T|X Baja Series adds BF Goodrich T/A KO tires (LT265/70R16) and bead-lock style off-road wheels with an exclusive Gun-Metal Gray finish, TRD Cat-back Exhaust, increased front ride height of nearly two inches and unique Baja Series graphics.

The front suspension has been upgraded to include Ø66mm piston Bilstein race shocks with TRD coil springs that feature a protective zinc plated body and a one inch increase in wheel travel. The rear suspension is equipped with Ø50mm piston Bilstein race shocks with a remote reservoir to increase shock oil capacity for greater heat dissipation and damping sensitivity. The rear shocks also include a zinc plated body and a 1.5-inch increase in wheel travel.
The T|X Baja Series will be part of a Tacoma line that was updated for 2012 with a restyled front end and a refreshed interior in all models. Exterior changes included a redesigned hood, grille, headlamps and front bumper, among other changes. Inside, Tacoma received a new center-instrument panel design with a revised gauge cluster, along with a new steering wheel. A redesigned center stack added new air conditioner/heater controls and power point locations.
The 2012 Tacoma interior also received a new look with a black high-contrast center console, switch plate covers, dash and upper door trim, while the SR5 grade featured a new seat fabric design. Tacoma offers new heavy-duty all-weather flooring option for 2012 on Tacoma Access and Double Cab models equipped with a V6 engine. The more specialized TRD Sport and Off-Road packages also feature new water-resistant fabric protection seats.
All Tacoma TRD T|X Baja Series models will be built exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (TMMTX) in San Antonio and will reach dealer showrooms in May 2012.
